Blankenberge Harbour Festival : Sun, sea and blissful shanties: the Blankenberge (Belgium) Harbour Festivities were a smashing success again this year! From Thursday 9 May to Sunday 12 May, the port of Blankenberge buzzed with maritime folklore, music, delicious food and drink.

Unfortunately, much to my regret, I could not be at the Fisherman’s Parade. But from what I heard from others, it was a true spectacle! Beautiful costumes, old ships and upbeat music made for an unforgettable parade through the harbour. In contrast, the floral tribute at the monument to the deceased sailors was a moment of pure emotion that gave many a visitor goosebumps. In 2025, as a day tourist from Mechelen, I hope to experience the full event.
Music for the Deck and Legs
Fortunately, I was able to enjoy the rest of the Harbour Festival to the fullest. Live music could be heard on several stages. From shanties and sea shanties to contemporary pop and rock. Something for everyone!. Continue reading below the photos

One of the popular moments was during the Northsea Folk & Shanty Festival. The catchy rhythms and powerful voices of the shanty choirs created an unforgettable atmosphere. Songs such as “Drunken Sailor” and “What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?” brought partygoers and bystanders to ecstasy….
Tasty Feast of Fresh Fish
No Harbour Parties without fish! And let that be something I enjoy immensely. At several stalls you could taste the tastiest fresh fish, prepared in different ways. From smoked salmon to fried cod, I feasted on all this deliciousness.
More than just a party
Blankenberge’s Harbour Festival is more than just a party. It is a tribute to the city’s rich fishing tradition. Fishing folk groups provided authentic atmosphere, while you could browse among the stalls for fresh fish, artisanal products and local delicacies. Read more below the photos

I enjoyed talking to locals about the history of fishing in Blankenberge. It was fascinating to hear about the hard working conditions and rich culture of the fishing community.
A first giant was designed in the early 1950s when the harbour festivals were first organised. This was named “Korno” after the fisherman-folk figure Cornelius Huys. A second giantess “Colette” followed in 1974. A giant wedding was organised during the Port festivities that year, which was of course celebrated lavishly at the time. Another giant child “Seven” followed later.
The Giants from Blankenberge at the Harbour Festival
During the 2004 harbour celebrations, a new giant was christened. This giant, obviously a fisherman’s figure, was named after skipper-sheriff August Van Heetvelde. However, in the Blankenberg fishing industry, everyone has a nickname or patch name, hence giant “Gusten Kwik”. These giants keep a watchful eye from the Barcadere during the four-day event. On Sunday morning, there is the giants’ tour as an announcement of the Great Fishermen’s Procession.
